leaf collection

Typically, the first few weeks of leaf collection is completed with one crew due to the small amount of leaves available for collection.  As the number of leaves placed curbside increases the Public Works Department will then use two crews to do the bulk of the work.  The first crew begins their route along Stone Mill Road and then proceeds south thru Fairway Park, Colonial Manor, West Ridge, Wilshire Hills, Bowling Green, Georgetown Hills, Leaf Park, Breezewood, Springdale Farms, Manor Oaks, and Shadowstone.  The second crew will begin its collection route in the West Fairway area that includes West Fairway Drive, Joseph Road and Kent Road.  The crew will then proceed to West Lancaster, Manor Ridge, Woods Edge, Holland Hills, Washington Boro, Letort Manor, and Perth Hills.  Weather permitting each crew will begin the above-mentioned routes each week beginning on Monday mornings and continue in sequence until each area is covered.  Residents can check for daily leaf collection information that is posted on the Townships web site at www.manortwp.org.  Leaf collection usually concludes the first full week of December and can vary from season to season.  For final collection information residents can check the web site for this detail.

Residents who live along Millersville Road and Columbia Avenue will receive leaf collection on the following weeks: October 26, November 9 and 23, and December 7.

Once again, we remind our residents who are serviced by leaf collection to follow these simple guidelines.  Leaves must be placed in a row along the edge of the street.  Leaves must be loose and not bagged for curbside collection.  Tree branches, brush trimmings, plants, and grass clippings are prohibited and will not be accepted.  Leaves must be accessible to the crews.  Vehicles that are parked near or on the leaf piles create an obstruction for our crews.  Leaves that are obstructed will not be collected.

December 8, 2009.  Leaf collection has been completed for this year.

Adopt A Highway

Under the Adopt-A-Highway program, volunteer groups or individuals agree to become special caretakers of portions of township roads for a one-year period. The groups agree to pick up litter on these segments at least four time a year. The Township has designated approximately 43 miles of township road for the clean-up program. The Adopt-A-Highway program began in 1990 and has grown to be one of the largest programs in the state. There are 29 groups, such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church Groups, College Sororities and Fraternities, Service Groups, families and private employers participating in the program. In return, Manor Township places identification signs along the road acknowledging the adopting group. If you are interested in becoming part of the Adopt-A-Highway Program, please contact us at roads@manortwp.org

Prevent Storm water pollution

Here are some important things you can do:

  • Properly dispose of hazardous substances such as used oil, cleaning supplies and paint- never pour them down any part of the storm sewer system and report anyone who does.
  • Use pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides properly and efficiently to prevent excess runoff
  • Look for signs of soil and other pollutants, such as debris and chemicals, leaving construction sites in storm water runoff or tracked into roads by construction sites that could impact storm water runoff to your community.
  • Install innovative storm water practices on residential property, such a rain barrels or rain gardens, that capture storm water and keep it on site instead of letting it drain away into the storm sewer system.
  • Store materials that could pollute storm water indoors and use containers for outdoor storage that do not rust or leak to eliminate exposure of materials to storm water.
  • Report any discharges from storm water outfalls during time of dry weather- a sign that there could be a problem with the storm sewer system.
  • Pick up after pets and dispose of their waste properly. No matter where pets make a mess- in a backyard or at the park- storm water runoff can carry pet waste from the land to the storm sewer system to a stream.
